In recognition of Aortic Dissection Awareness Day on September 19, CommonSpirit Health hosted an Aortic Dissection Survivor Day in Colorado Springs, bringing together survivors, family members, physicians, and care teams for a morning of education, connection, and celebration.
The event honored patients who have overcome one of the most serious cardiovascular emergencies and provided an opportunity for survivors to connect with others who share a similar experience. Attendees enjoyed breakfast, received commemorative gift bags, and celebrated an important milestone: survival.
An aortic dissection occurs when a tear develops in the inner layer of the aorta, the body’s largest artery. Because the condition can become life-threatening very quickly, prompt diagnosis and treatment are critical. Awareness events like this one help shine a light on a condition that many people know little about until it affects them or someone they love.

As part of the program, survivors and guests heard from specialists who care for patients with complex aortic disease. Dr. Betty Kim of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery Associates discussed Type A aortic dissection, while Dr. Danielle Smith of Colorado Vascular Associates spoke about Type B aortic dissection and the role of Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR), a minimally invasive treatment option for certain patients. Dr. David Feuer of Colorado Vascular Associates also participated in the event, bringing his experience caring for many of the survivors and families affected by aortic disease and highlighting the importance of long-term vascular care and follow-up.
“An aortic dissection diagnosis can be life-changing, and recovery often requires tremendous courage and perseverance. Being able to gather with survivors and their families to recognize those journeys is a powerful reminder of why awareness and patient support matter.” – Dr. Danielle Smith, Colorado Vascular Associates
While the educational presentations offered valuable insights into diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, the true focus of the day was the patients themselves.
Surviving an aortic dissection often involves emergency treatment, a lengthy recovery, and ongoing medical follow-up. Bringing survivors together provided an opportunity to recognize the strength, resilience, and determination that helped them navigate those challenges. It also offered a reminder that no one faces that journey alone.
As Aortic Dissection Awareness Day is observed around the world, events like Survivor Day highlight the importance of education, early recognition, and continued support for patients and families affected by aortic disease.
Most importantly, the gathering served as a celebration of life and the remarkable individuals whose survival stories continue to inspire others.
